From our teachers' playbook

Reading between the lines, and proving it

What do 6th graders learn about reading comprehension?

In 6th grade, comprehension moves from "what happened?" to "how do you know?" Students cite specific evidence from the text to back up their answers, figure out a theme or central idea and trace how it develops, and summarize without adding their own opinions. They analyze how an author's word choice creates a tone, explain a narrator's point of view, and work through longer nonfiction like biographies and articles. The big shift is from finding answers to defending them. The click is when a student says, "Look, it says right here in paragraph three..." all on their own.

Our favorite ways to teach 6th grade reading comprehension

Middle school readers need to think, then prove it. These moves build that habit.

Answer, cite, explain

Model a three-part answer: state your answer, quote the line that proves it, then explain how the quote proves it. Do one together on the board, then have students color-code the three parts in their own answers. It turns vague answers into strong ones fast.

Why it works: showing first, practicing together, then letting kids try alone is the "gradual release" model teachers have relied on for decades (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Fiction one day, facts the next

Alternate stories and nonfiction articles so students practice switching strategies: theme and character for fiction, central idea and evidence for nonfiction. Mixing genres keeps them flexible readers.

Why it works: shuffled practice teaches kids to choose the right strategy, not just repeat one, and it improved test scores in research (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).

6th grade reading comprehension: your questions

What reading skills should a 6th grader have?

A 6th grader should cite text evidence, determine a theme or central idea, summarize objectively, analyze word choice and tone, and explain a narrator's or author's point of view. They also compare information across texts.

How do I help my 6th grader with reading comprehension?

Ask "How do you know?" after every answer and have them point to the sentence that proves it. Talking about articles, books and even movies this way builds the same skill.

What does citing text evidence mean?

It means using a quote or specific detail from the passage to support an answer. Students name the part of the text, quote or paraphrase it, and explain how it proves their point.

How long should 6th grade reading passages be?

Practice passages often run from about one page to several pages. Building up gradually from shorter passages helps students keep focus on longer test passages.
