From our teachers' playbook

Print, practice, and watch skills grow

What can kids practice with printable worksheets?

Pretty much everything! Our worksheets cover counting tens and ones, adding within 20, long division and decimals, editing sentences, labeling cells and the skeletal system, and map skills like latitude and longitude. A worksheet works best right after kids have learned something hands-on, as the practice that locks it in. There are handy helpers too: blank calendars, graph paper and a paper cube template. The sweet spot is a short page a child can finish with success, like 8 + 7 = 15 five different ways.

How we get the most out of worksheets

A worksheet is only as good as the routine around it. These three habits make every page count.

Do the first one together

Before kids start, solve problem one out loud on the board and narrate your thinking. "I see 4 tens and 3 ones, so that's 43." Then let them try number two while you circulate. Those two minutes save a whole page of repeated mistakes.

Why it works: showing first, practicing together, then letting kids try alone is the "gradual release" model teachers have relied on for decades (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Mix it up

Instead of 20 addition problems in a row, grab a page that mixes adding and subtracting within 20. Kids have to stop and decide which operation each problem needs, and that deciding is exactly where real learning happens.

Why it works: shuffled practice teaches kids to choose the right strategy, not just repeat one, and it improved test scores in research (Rohrer and Taylor, 2007).

Warm up with a mini quiz

Start the day with an editing page from last week's skill. Kids fix the sentences cold, with no reminders. Pulling it back out of memory is what makes it stay.

Why it works: pulling an answer out of memory makes it stick far better than rereading it, one of the strongest findings in learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Questions parents and teachers ask about worksheets

Are worksheets good for kids?

Yes, when they are short and used for practice after real teaching. A worksheet is a great way to see what a child can do independently and to catch mistakes early.

What grades are these printable worksheets for?

Our worksheets run from preschool through middle school, across math, reading, grammar, science and social studies. Use the grade and subject filters to find the right level fast.

How many worksheets should a child do a day?

Quality beats quantity. One focused page a day, checked together, usually does more than a big stack done in a rush.

How do I keep kids engaged with worksheets?

Mix skills on one page, set a friendly timer, let kids check with a partner, or turn the page into a game with dice or a spinner. Variety keeps brains switched on.
