From our teachers' playbook

The words that show up on every page

What do kids learn about high frequency words?

High frequency words are simply the words that appear most often in print. Just 100 of them, like the, of, and, to, in, make up about half of the words in a typical children's book. Kids learn them from lists such as Dolch and Fry, a few at a time: pre-primer and kindergarten words first, then first, second and third grade lists. The goal is reading each word in about a second so the brain can save its energy for meaning. The big moment comes when a child picks up a new book and realizes they already know half the page!

Our favorite ways to make high frequency words automatic

Automatic means fast and effortless. These three moves get kids there without a single boring drill.

The one-second check

Hold up a word and count "one-Mississippi" in your head. Read it in time and it goes in the "got it" stack; hesitate and it stays in the practice stack for tomorrow. Kids can see their stack grow, and you know exactly which words to reteach.

Why it works: researchers who compared ten study methods found practice testing is one of the two that work best (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Five new, five old

Each week add five new words from the list and keep five from earlier weeks in the mix. A short worksheet on Monday, a quick re-read on Wednesday, a hunt in a real book on Friday. Old words keep coming back before they fade.

Why it works: short practice spread over several days beats one long session, according to a large review of learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Words on the move

Tape high frequency words around the room and send kids on a word walk with a clipboard. They read each word, write it, and use it in a sentence to a buddy. Moving while reading keeps the wiggliest learners locked in.

Why it works: in a well-known study, a few short sessions of a simple number board game measurably boosted young children's number skills (Ramani and Siegler, 2008).

High frequency words: your questions

What's the difference between high frequency words and sight words?

High frequency words are the words used most often in print. Sight words are words a child can read instantly, on sight. The goal is to turn high frequency words into sight words, so many teachers use the two terms almost interchangeably.

Should I use the Dolch list or the Fry list?

Either works well. Dolch has 220 service words grouped by grade, plus 95 common nouns. Fry has 1,000 words ranked by how often they appear, and the first 300 cover most early reading. Pick one list for your class and stick with it so kids aren't learning two orders at once.

How many high frequency words should a kindergartner know?

Most kindergarten programs aim for a few dozen words by the end of the year, often the Dolch pre-primer and primer words. First graders usually work through roughly the first 100 Fry words. Steady progress matters more than hitting an exact number.

Can high frequency words be sounded out?

Many can! Words like and, it, can and run follow regular phonics patterns, so teach kids to decode them. Only part of a few words, like the "o" in of or the "ai" in said, is irregular, and that's the part to practice by heart.

How long does it take to learn a list of high frequency words?

A few new words a week with daily review is a comfortable pace for most kids. Short sessions of five to ten minutes beat one long session, and reading the words in real books is what locks them in.
