From our teachers' playbook

Catchy tunes that stick (in a good way)

What can kids learn from educational songs?

Songs are how kids carry facts around in their heads. Our songs cover letters and their sounds, the alphabet, counting by 2s through 10s, the seasons, states of matter and all 50 states. Rhythm and rhyme turn long lists into something kids can actually remember. Try it: once a child can sing 6, 12, 18, 24, the six times table is already halfway learned.

How we teach with songs

A good song is a lesson in disguise. Here's how we squeeze every bit of learning out of one.

Echo, then together

Sing one line of the Alphabet Song and have kids echo it back. After a few rounds, sing the whole thing together while you point to each letter on the wall chart. Echoing slows it down so no letter gets mumbled into "elemenopee."

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Add the moves

Give every verse of the Matter Song a motion: tight fists for solids, wavy arms for liquids, fluttering fingers for gases. Kids remember the motion, and the motion pulls up the fact.

Why it works: playful practice with a clear goal keeps kids practicing longer, and simple learning games have been shown to build real skills (Ramani and Siegler, 2008).

Song of the week, every day

Pick one song, like Counting By Sixes, and sing it daily for a week as your line-up or clean-up tune. Short and often beats one long practice session. Next week, add a new song and keep the old one in rotation.

Why it works: short practice spread over several days beats one long session, according to a large review of learning research (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Questions parents and teachers ask about songs

Why do songs help kids learn?

Melody, rhythm and repetition make facts easier to hold onto, especially lists like the alphabet, skip counting or the 50 states. Kids happily sing a song twenty times that they would never repeat as a worksheet.

What age are educational songs best for?

Songs shine from preschool through 2nd grade, but they work at any age. Older kids use the counting songs for multiplication and the 50 States Song for geography.

Can I play the songs without a screen?

Yes. Many of our songs come as MP3s, so kids can listen in the car, at a listening center or during quiet time.

How do I use songs during the school day?

Use them as transitions: lining up, cleaning up, starting the morning. A song you sing every day becomes practice without taking any extra time.
