From our teachers' playbook

Count on it, count by it, count it all

What do kids learn about counting?

Counting grows a lot across the early grades. Kindergartners count to 100 by ones and tens and count up to 20 objects, knowing the last number tells how many. First graders count to 120, start counting on to add, and count back to subtract. In 2nd grade, kids skip count by 5s, 10s and 100s up to 1,000: 350, 360, 370, 380. The big click is seeing counting as patterns, which leads straight into place value, addition and multiplication.

Our favorite ways to teach counting

Counting sticks with rhythm, real objects and lots of talking about how we counted. These are our go-to moves.

Skip count to a beat

Pick one skip-counting song for the week, like counting by fives. Clap or jump on each number as you sing. By Friday, kids can count nickels or tally marks without missing a beat.

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Bundle it in tens

Give kids a pile of craft sticks and have them bundle groups of ten with rubber bands. Then count the bundles by tens and the loose sticks by ones. It turns counting big numbers into a quick and accurate job, and it sets up place value.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.

How did you count?

Show a picture with a set of dots or objects for a few seconds and ask, "How many? How did you know?" One child counted by twos, another saw five and three. Sharing strategies helps everyone count smarter, not just faster.

Why it works: using clear, consistent math words out loud is one of the U.S. Department of Education's recommendations for elementary math.

Counting questions we hear a lot

What counting skills should a kindergartner have?

By the end of kindergarten, kids count to 100 by ones and tens, count forward from any number, and count up to 20 objects to tell how many. They also write numbers from 0 to 20.

What is skip counting?

Skip counting is counting by a number other than one, like 2, 4, 6, 8 or 5, 10, 15, 20. It helps kids count faster and builds the base for multiplication.

What is counting on?

Counting on is an addition strategy where kids start at the bigger number and count up. For 8 + 3, they say "8" and count 9, 10, 11. It's faster than counting both groups from one.

How do I help my child count past 100?

Use a hundreds chart and show how the pattern repeats: 98, 99, 100, 101. Count by tens past 100 to show the pattern too. Songs that count to 120 help the order stick.
